With a Haitian-American father and a Puerto Rican mother, Basquiat’s diverse cultural heritage was one of his many sources of inspiration. Basquiat dropped out of high school and left home at age 17. He lived on the streets, with friends, or in abandoned buildings and took up graffiti. He emerged in the above ground New York art scene at age 20, and sky rocketed to fame. He died aged 27 from a heroin overdose.
